NBA DFS Core Plays – January 11, 2019

It’s about that time for another exciting day of NBA Basketball.

Tonight’s Slate is a little 9-piece chicken McNugget and I’m Lovin It.

Here are the Games:

ATL (109.8) @ PHI (122.3)

MIL (117.5) @ WAS (111.5)

IND (113.8) @ NY (105.3)

BKN (106.3) @ TOR (115.8)

CLE (101.0) @ HOU (115.0)

DAL (109.5) @ MIN (114.5)

CHA (107.5) @ UTA (112.0)

CHI (98.8) @ GS (112.3)

Our highest over/under of the night is going to be in the ATL @ PHI game and I agree whole heartedly that this game will be a high scoring battle. John Collins has come into his own for ATL with two-straight 44+ fantasy point nights for the Hawks.

  • Myles Turner will miss another game for the Pacers giving Domantas Sabonis another start at Center.
  • The Jazz will be without Ricky Rubio, Raul Neto & Dante Exum giving them no healthy PG on the roster besides Donovan Mitchell.
  • Damian Lillard is Questionable tonight with a sprained elbow.
  • And the Greek Freak has just been downgraded to Doubtful tonight. Uh oh.

I mean I can go on and on and on about all of the injuries we need to check up on before tip-off but I don’t want to do that because all I would be doing is speculating. Wait until about 3:30, and then start checking Twitter, the injuries will be announced you just have to be quick.

Point Guard

Top-Tier: Donovan Mitchell (PG/SG, UTA) – This pick is a no-brainer because of the guard depth that Utah is showing us right now. The Jazz have been left with no PG after the injuries to Raul Neto, Dante Exum and Ricky Rubio, meaning Mitchell will be forced to play on-ball and lead this offense. Last game vs ORL, Raul Neto was in the lineup and Mitchell still had a season-high 7 assists. Now without Neto, I think Mitchell easily tops double-digit assists. I mean they literally have no one else they can run at PG except maybe Joe Ingles? Oh yea and for all the stat-nuts out there: Mitchell has averaged 43.83 fantasy points over his last 3 games.

Value: Jeremy Lin (PG/SG, ATL) – Lin saw extended run off the bench last and even had a start the game before that vs TOR. In those two games Jeremy had himself averages of 33.625 fantasy points per game which is really high for someone as cheap as him. Now look, Jeremy Lin definitely has had his consistency issues in the past but right now you can’t say anything. Over 20+ fantasy points in five-straight games gives me hope that he will not tank your lineup.

Shooting Guard

Top-Tier: Luka Doncic (SG/SF, DAL) – Luka’s scored 57 points in his last two games to go along with 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and a block. He is an all-around beast and tonight with Dennis Smith Jr. OUT I expect him to step up more on the offensive end. Smith Jr. was out in their last game vs PHO and Doncic had over 100 touches which is a great sign. He’s also played over 35 minutes in his last two games which is a huge increase from the 26-29 minutes he was seeing for a few games. Can you believe this guy is a teenager?? Insane.

Value: Joe Ingles (SG/SF, UTA) – Talked about him earlier and I think he really might have to run the PG position for the second team. He did have 7 assists last game vs ORL which shows that he was taking on the role of a PG sort of. I mean Ingles always gets good assist numbers, so I imagine when you take away all of his PGs, he essentially becomes the PG. Ingles played 35 minutes last game, tonight without Neto I am expecting at least 38 minutes out of Ingles. Value player of the day right here because of his situation.

Small Forward

Top-Tier: Ben Simmons (PG/SF, PHI) – I love the fact that I can take Ben Simmons who is a PG at the SF position, makes things much easier for me. Anyway, the SF position is kind of hurt right now with Giannis and LeBron both likely sitting out tonight. This means Ben Simmons is out new top dog and rightfully so. Last time out vs ATL he was 1 assist shy of a triple-double, this time out I don’t see why he can’t get it. The Sixers are finally starting to play together and this means no more duds for any of the stars (Knock on wood). Simmons is averaging 44.15 fantasy points per game over his last 5 and he’s scored > 50 fantasy points in 3 out of 4 matchups vs. the Hawks over the last 2 years.

Value: Jae Crowder (SF/PF, UTA) – Heavy stack on Utah today since they are dealing with so many injuries. Crowder played 34 minutes last game vs ORL and had a dud of a performance with only 9 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. The touches (52) were there for Crowder he just couldn’t find his shot and ended up shooting 0-4 from 3-point range and 4/9 total. Don’t worry though, Crowder does more than just shoot, he is usually a rebound hog (4.7 RPG) and a force on the defensive end as well. Love the value coming out of Utah tonight with Crowder, Ingles and Mitchell.

Power Forward

Top-Tier: John Collins (PF/C, ATL) – Collins is only 21 years old and is averaging 18.8 PPG to go along with 10.6 RPG this season for the Hawks. And you know is still fresh when he plays 35 minutes in back-to-back games and balls out in both of them. He went off for 30 points and 14 rebounds last time out vs BKN and then had 21 points and 14 rebounds the game before that in TOR. Now the Hawks travel to PHI for a game that I expect to be closer than most people are anticipating. The Sixers are coming off a loss to the Wizards two nights ago and that is very, very suspect. Look for Collins to lead the Hawks offense and post a strong double-double.

Value: Ersan Ilyasova (PF/C, MIL) – Not 100% sure that he is going to get the start for the Greek Freak but if he does then he is a great value play. Last game vs HOU, Ersan saw 17 minutes and put up 10 points to go along with 7 rebounds. This is a good sign for Ersan who is coming off an injury that held him out of the lineup for almost a month. Basically, since the Greek Freak is likely OUT tonight someone has to step up in his place and start. I am expecting Ersan but it might also be Thon Maker so we need to check on the status closer to the 4PM PST tip-off.

Center

Top-Tier: Clint Capela (C, HOU) – I’m going out on a limb here and going to say that Capela may be underappreciated on tonight’s slate. That’s why I am showing the man some love and putting him up as my Top-Tier Center. And there are so many reasons why. Like his minutes average over his last 5 games which is 38 MPG. Or maybe we look towards the 15.4 rebounds per game over his last 5? But what about that 22 points per game over his last 5 as well? I can’t make this up y’all and he is not even one of the highest priced centers this slate. Love the matchup vs CLE and love the price.

Value: Wendell Carter Jr. (PF/C, CHI) – Sleeper alert. Wendell Carter Jr. has over 50 touches in 4 of his last 6 games. Wendell has also played the Warriors this year and he had 32.75 fantasy points in only 27 minutes. Now that was earlier in the year so expect him to see north of 30 minutes tonight if the game is close. Warriors are still waiting for Boogie to come back at center which means right now they are rolling out a bunch of hot garbage like Kevon Looney. Carter Jr. will dominate this matchup as he is a much more skilled player offensively and defensively than Looney is. Love the value and he plays in the final game of the slate.
