English Premier League – Match Day 16

Chelsea vs Aston Villa

Chelsea are coming off a disappointing 3-1 loss at Arsenal the last time out, and that result means they’ve now dropped three of their previous four league matches while conceding multiple goals in each of the last two — that’s far from encouraging for a team that was supossed to be fighting in the title race, but they’ve been slipping of late. Aston Villa have struggled with consistency at times, but it can’t be denied that they’re clearly trending in the right path — their 3-0 win over Crystal Palace the last time out made it two wins in a row and now they’ve gone undefeated in their last four league games while keeping a clean sheet in each one of those contests. Despite their impressive form, Aston Villa start this game as underdogs and Chelsea still seem to have the edge, particularly due to the fact that they’ll be at home for this one, where they’ve posted a W4, D2, L1 record this season. Therefore, Chelsea should come away with the win in this one.

Southampton vs West Ham United

Southampton are coming off a scoreless draw against Fulham the last time out and, while they’ve moved down in the standings and quite far from the European competitions zone, they’ve still been a tough team to face — that is especially true when playing at St. Mary’s Stadium, where the Saints have posted a W4, L3 record. West Ham United are coming off a 2-2 home draw against Brighton and they’ve won just once in their last five league games (W1, D2, L2), but they’ve been decent on the road with just two losses over their last five games on enemy soil (W2, D1, L2). Southampton and West Ham have posted the exact same form over their last four league matches, winning just once in that span, coming off a three-game winless skid and securing a draw during Boxing Day, so it’s fair to say neither team is ahead of the other when it comes to form. The Saints have been marginally better all season long, but they’re trending in the wrong direction of late and West Ham might take advantage of that. Expect this game to settle with a draw.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton

Manchester United are coming off a 2-2 draw at Leicester the last time out, and that result could’ve ended differently hadn’t they allowed a late equalizer to Jamie Vardy — The Red Devils currently sit in fourth place of the standings but, with game in hand and given the way they’ve been playing of late, it’s safe to say their title aspirations are real. Wolverhampton are moving in the opposite direction, as they’re coming off a strong 1-1 home draw against Tottenham but have won just once in their last five league games (W1, D1, L3) and have been struggling to find solutions upfront following the serious injury sustained by Raul Jimenez. Manchester United are far better when playing on the road, but they should take advantage of the Wolves’ scoring woes (just 15 goals in 15 matches) to walk away with the three points here.
