Bundesliga Match Day 26 Review

There’s no doubt about it now. The Bundesliga is definitely back and had some pretty good games on display this weekend. We saw a wide range of team performances and while some teams came out of the gates fired up, others never really got going, showing the sluggish effects of a 2 month season break. No major surprises or shake ups in the table, but the world is happy just to have top flight soccer again. Here’s our review of some of Matchday 26’s best matches. If you aren’t up to speed yet and need help with how to pick a bundesliga team you can check out BetQL’s great article.

Dortmund vs Schalke
4 -0

The Revierderby did not disappoint…. neutrals or Dortmund fans. Schalke supporters, on the other hand, will be trying to drown their sorrows for a while. 2 goals either side of halftime took the wind out of Schalke’s sales and Dortmund marched to a 4-0 win. Both of winger Rafael Guerreiro’s goals exemplified Dortmund’s dynamic attack and Schalke’s inability to effectively manage it. Dortmund playmaker Julian Brandt had a hand in all the goals and clearly stayed fit during the league break. Another high scoring Revierderby in the books, Dortmund fans will be ecstatic with the result and the fact that Erling Haaland continued his excellent form by netting the opening goal. Borussia Monchengladbach vs Eintracht Frankfurt
3-1
This match conjured two very different experiences for each set of fans on Saturday. Joy for some (Gladbach) and misery for others (Frankfurt). Gladbach’s Alassane Plea scored in the first minute of the match and the home team did not look back from there. Eintracht never really got going and looked groggy from the long break. Gladbach’s Breel Embolo looked sharp for the Foals, who could have easily had another goal or two if not for some last ditch defending from Frankfurt. Gladbach’s win keeps them in the title hunt at 3rd place while Frankfurt sink to 13th.

Mainz 05 v Koln
2-2

It was a tight contest between two even teams as Koln hosted Mainz 05 this weekend. Koln controlled the first half but Mainz were efficient, scoring twice in just 3 shots on target. Loanee Mark Uth was a bright spot for Koln supporters, scoring a goal and driving the attack with his work rate. But after going up 2-0, Koln took their foot off the pedal and allowed Mainz to come back. To their credit, Mainz scored a nice goal to make it 2-1 and then equalized in the 72nd minute. In short, this match was an entertaining display of football but typified the lack of consistency that both sides have suffered this season.
