Houston Texans 20 – 34 Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs kicked off their title defense with a dominant performance in Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season, going scoreless in the first quarter but putting up 31 unanswered points to defeat the Texans, 34-20, in the opening game for both teams this season. Patrick Mahomes delivered an impressive performance, going 24-for-32 with 211 yards and three touchdowns, while Clyde Edwards-Helaire added 138 yards and one touchdown in 25 rushes. Sammy Watkins, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce recorded receiving touchdowns for the Chiefs. Deshaun Watson went 20-for-32 for the Texans and racked up more yards than Mahomes (253), but threw just one touchdown and also added a pick. Watson also scored a rushing touchdown, and new signing David Johnson, who joined the Texans in the offseason via trade, also scored on the ground. The Chiefs edged the Texans in total yards 369 to 360.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23 – 34 New Orleans Saints
Tom Brady’s debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t go as planned, as the former Patriots quarterback was at the losing end of a duel between two future Hall of Famers when he faced Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. Brady went 23-for-36 for 239 yards and two touchdowns, but he threw two interceptions that proved to be costly — including a pick-six in the third quarter. Brees, on the other hand, went 18-for-30 with two touchdowns and no picks, but he also got support from Alvin Kamara and Jared Cook. Kamara found the end zone despite racking up just 16 yards on 12 carries, while Cook ended with 80 yards on five receptions. Despite the loss, the Buccaneers edged the Saints in total yards 310 to 271.

Pittsburgh Steelers 26 – 16 New York Giants
Ben Roethlisberger returned to a football field after missing most of the 2019 NFL season, and he did it in style — the veteran quarterback completed 21 of 32 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns with no picks, leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 26-16 win over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. The Steelers had to deal with the loss of James Conner, who suffered an injury, but Benny Snell stepped it up and racked up 113 yards on 19 carries to lead the Steelers’ rushing attack. Roethlisberger also connected on two touchdowns with JuJu Smith-Schuster, who registered six receptions for 69 yards as well as the two aforementioned scores. Daniel Jones had a decent game for the Giants with 279 yards and two touchdown passes, but he also threw two interceptions while completing just 26 of his 41 passes. Saquon Barkley had a game to forget, logging 15 carries and mustering just six yards. Jones was the Giants’ leading rusher with 22 yards on four attempts. Darius Slayton made an impact and built a case for more targets, though, finishing with 102 yards and two scores on six receptions. The Steelers gained 349 total yards to the Giants’ 291.
