Borussia Dortmund v SC Paderborn 07
6-1

The Benteler-Arena is already the Bundesliga’s smallest venue, but Paderborn players would have wished it was even smaller on Sunday, small as a tiny little room under the stairs they could have curled up and cried in. Because 2nd place Dortmund were in town and they were down to clown. No disrespect to honest Paderborn, who are 17th in the league and were in desperate need of points in their relegation fight. Remarkably, all 7 goals came in the 2nd half. Paderborn was able to stay organized and compact defensively, and Dortmund’s sluggishness also contributed to the 0-0 halftime score. The match was tight at 2-1 until the 74th minute, when Jadon Sancho scored his second and Dortmund turned on the quality.

For the Yellow and Black, Sancho finally hit his stride again and sank 3 goals past Paderborn keeper Leopold Zingerle. Always in control, Dortmund maintained 60% possession, Emre Can and Thomas Delaney forming a solid midfield partnership, and generated 15 total shots. Thorgan Hazard, Achraf Hakimi, and club legend Marcel Schmelzer were also amongst the goals in Dortmund’s desperate pursuit of Bayern. To their credit, Paderborn scored a 72nd minute penalty but will hope for better luck against RB Leipzig, another formidable opponent, on Matchday 30.
